Earning a living as a freelance guide-interpreter for many years, Cartier traveled through most states in the US.

These images reflect the often unexpected moods or features of the cities and landscapes he visited, rather than their better-known aspects. 

For a fresher vision, Cartier used to fantasize that he was an Oriental visitor looking for the first time at an "exotic" Western world.
